The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) hosted the Tsunami Disaster Mitigation Seminar in Japan from 14 to 22 February 2008, under the auspices of Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
This seminar was held for the Indian Ocean countries to improve their tsunami warning system that is expected to reduce risk of such tsunami disasters as the one brought about by the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami in December 2004.
Officials of the national tsunami warning centers from Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand participated in the seminar. JMA's tsunami early warning system as well as overall Japan's tsunami disaster mitigation system was introduced to the participants through lectures and field trips in the seminar.
