Visit by Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director-General of the India Meteorological Department (IMD)
On 10 February 2026, Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra (Director-General of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Permanent Representative of India with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and third Vice-President of WMO) led a delegation on a visit to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and met with Director-General NOMURA Ryoichi on the occasion of the WMO Public-Private Engagement Workshop (Tokyo, 10 – 13 February 2026).
The parties exchanged views on PPE-related activities in both countries, echoing the main theme of the workshop. Mr. Nomura expressed appreciation for the crucial roles played by Dr. Mohapatra as the third Vice-President in leading important agendas, particularly at the extra-ordinary Congress in October 2025. Dr. Mohapatra emphasized legislative arrangements are essential in advancing meteorological services through PPE, and highlighted the workshop as a timely and useful to learn good practices in Japan and other countries. Both parties expressed appreciation for the long-standing friendship and cooperation between the organizations, including those between RSMC New Delhi and RSMC Tokyo, as well as between RCC Pune and RCC Tokyo and confirmed the mutual benefits of and agreed to strengthen the collaboration in various areas.
